Sharepoint / SQL install for Webparts

Hi,

OSI seem to be recommending a separate install of SQL dedicated exclusively to the SharePoint/Webparts system.  For those with limits on number of servers we can conjure up - is it ok to use an existing SQL Server?  I think it would work ok - subject to not being overloaded but has anyone done it in the real world?
